Cancer Research Wales are a brand proud to be undertaking some of the world’s leading cancer research. In the pursuit of a cure, they are making vital progress into the prevention, early diagnoses and better treatment, which will benefit cancer patients in Wales and beyond.

They came to us with two key issues: people didn’t realise the extent of their scientific capabilities, and people were unaware that they weren’t connected to Cancer Research.

Through focus groups, copious amounts of research and a fantastic brand workshop with the team, we were able to provide them with a brand blueprint, and a set of core brand values that laid the foundation for us to give them a whole new brand identity.

The concept behind the logo was to experiment with ink being dropped into water to replicate the scientific experiments Cancer Wales carry out. We selected a series of different marks and settled for one final ‘primary’ mark that would be used as the hero image for the logo. It also represents a cell in the petridish (that’s the circle) – the circle has now evolved and is used as an accent tool throughout the brand.

 

Our work has been carried through to their logo, website, shop interiors, marketing, literature and even as far as their uniforms and collection tins.

 

 

We spent a day in the main Cancer Research Wales lab in the Velindre Hospital, Whitchurch with the aim of creating photography that showcased the work of the scientists and squashed the assumption that they are a small charity with limited resources by showcasing their specialised, hi-tech lab.

 

 

Shop interiors were designed to represent a boutique rather than a standard charity shop. We tied everything back to the scientific theme with quotes on the wall that linked science and fashion. The shops have been so well received, the new approach is being rolled out across other shops.  Sketch-up 3D rendering was created for the client to see exactly what the shop would look like before they’d even called the painters.
